Introduction to Grants for Nonprofit Organizations
Have you heard about grants that are available that could help you in supporting your nonprofit organization and are curious on how you can apply?  If you answered yes then this beginner’s workshop is for you.  You’ll discover what constitutes a grant, the different grant categories, available grant research tools, tips for writing successful grants and the importance of grant contract management.  This course is for the novice fundraiser who has yet to explore the world of grants.

Mechanics of Grant Writing
Raising money by winning grants is a long-term, never-ending management function of your charitable organization. The process includes prospect research and relationship development, the mechanics of writing the grant proposal, and (for successful proposals) strong grant management including contract compliance, project management, financial management, and evaluation. This workshop for novice grant writers focuses on the mechanics of proposal writing including how to develop a need statement, outline a proposal narrative, and prepare a project budget. You will also review samples of grant applications and examine guidelines of varying levels of difficulty.

IRS Compliance in Accepting and Acknowledging Donations
This presentation introduces board members and other volunteers to fundraising vocabulary, acknowledgement requirements, appropriate use of funds raised, understanding “fair market value” for fundraising events, and recognizing unrelated business income.  In addition to federal compliance, the importance of understanding individual states’ fundraising requirements will be discussed.

Charitable Contributions from the Donor’s View:  Deductibility, Substantiation, and Disclosure.
This presentation discusses how to best align fundraising programs to the benefit of donors, substantiation rules for donors of charitable contributions, and disclosure rules for charities receiving certain quid pro quo contributions.

IRS Form 990 – A Guided Tour
The annual return of a tax-exempt organization is more than just required paperwork.  It is a “look under the hood” of how your organization operates.  Form 990 is used by government entities and donors to ensure good stewardship of funds and the use of best industry practices in day-to-day management.  Bring the latest copy of your organization’s 990 to learn how to read it and what it says about your program.

Fundraising within the Law for Nonprofits: Compliance for Raffles, Casino Nights, and More (Texas only)
Texas state law is very specific on how organizations may use gaming as a fundraising tool. This workshop covers state and federal laws surrounding raffles, bingo, casino nights, and poker runs.  You owe it to yourself to become familiar with these laws in order to meet your obligation to conduct business within the law and avoid trouble for your organization and yourself.  This session will provide information only and is not intended to provide legal advice.
